Caldecotts & Newbery Awards

Every January a new book is chosen for the Caldecott award based on a picture with the best illustrations.  This year's winner is called "Locomotive," illustrated and written by Brian Floca
Honor books  were  as follows"Journey," written and illustrated by Aaron Becker
"Flora and the Flamingo," written and illustrated by Molly Idle
"Mr. Wuffles!" written and illustrated by David Wiesner.  The Newberry award is also given out at this time for the best writing in a children's book. The Newbery medal for "the most distinguished American children's book" of 2013 was awarded Monday to Flora & Ulysses, written by Kate DiCamillo, the new ambassador for young people's literature, and illustrated in black and white by K.G. Campbell.  In 2nd grade we discuss the Caldecott award we look at different illustration styles and we try to recreate a sampling of three of our own favorite books in a slide show.  Here is the caldecott winner for 2014

 Also honored were Doll Bones by Holly Black, The Year of Billy Miller by Kevin Henkes, One Came Home by Amy Timberlake and Paperboy by Vince Vawter.
